Eco-Tip Tuesday: Own Your Coffee Cup

eco-tip-tuesdayTis the season for cold, frigid weather and along with the drop in temperature comes plenty of hot drinks – coffee, hot chocolate, tea – to keep us warm and toasty. Did you know that over 50% of adults over the age of 18 drink coffee every day – that’s over 150 million people drinking coffee daily!

But these hot drinks inevitably equate to large amounts of waste: disposable cups, the lids, the straws and mixers, the cozies, the individual Keurig pods, individually-wrapped sugar and creamer packets. And pretty much all of this ends up in our landfills, piling up higher and higher – Americans throw away about 25 billion Styrofoam coffee cups every year, and 2.5 million plastic beverage bottles every hour…and most of these materials do not biodegrade or decompose. Yikes.

Instead…take your own reusable travel mug with you to the coffee shop and most places accommodate this growing trend and often even encourage it by offering a discount on your drink! Not only will this prevent mass amounts of unnecessary waste, but there are also SO many cute, safe and reusable travel mugs that can become a staple in your personal accessories style. Many travel mugs are designed to be used over 3,000 times or more and environmental impact of this simple change is enormous.

Winter bonus – for friends and family who don’t currently use them, travel mugs make great holiday gifts and stocking stuffers!
