My good friend, Erica, emailed last week with this book that has been turned into a documentary called Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The premise of the book is the journalistic team of Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn go in-depth into the struggles, discriminations, abuse and most grotesque human right violations women face in developing areas of Africa and Asia and how from these places of darkness, these beautiful women have turned their situations into opportunities of light, hope and healing. Many times these women are the bread-winners for their impoverished families and are the real catalysts for economic growth and stability in their communities. I just finished up a book I was in the middle of last night, and now I am very much looking forward to reading Half the Sky!
Recently, they put a face with this book and created a 4-hour documentary that took 6 American actresses to these places of oppression to talk with these empowered women and walk us through the horrific struggles they face. PBS has offered viewing of this documentary since last week and today is the last day you are able to watch it on their website for free. This is a MUST-SEE video and I encourage everyone to take some time from their day to watch, even if you only have time to see a part of it. It will leave you in tears and wanting to do more.
